Nicky Brier

I’m a textile artist and designer working from my home studio in Cheshire.

My fascination with colour, texture and the way materials work together goes back to my art college days in the late 1980s, where I studied woven textile design. I was taught the importance of edges, layers and finish in elevating a design, and that thinking has stayed with me ever since.

It’s something I notice everywhere. The contrast of rough bark against delicate leaves, punctuated with pops of bright berries and birds amongst the hedgerows, or the way the textures of velvet, linen and wood bring an interior to life.

That same fascination runs through my textile work. I love the softness and depth of needle-felted wool, but I also want definition. My signature metal zip edging contains the wool, giving each design a crisp, stylised shape and a contrast between soft and structured materials.

From my original designs, I create handmade brooches, greeting cards and a small collection of gifts, allowing the artwork to be worn, treasured and shared in different ways.

My work is stocked in a small number of independent shops, including the National Trust shop at Tatton Park in Cheshire, and I also sell directly to customers across the UK and beyond.
